Bonjour
Class 5 have been havi
ng a fantastic French time over the last 2 weeks and invited the rest of the school, staff and parents to come along and join in.
The creative curriculum has allowed us to explore France in a completely different way - by experiencing it. Class 5 wanted to visit France and with cost implications and time an issue this was simply not possible.
SO we thought - lets bring France to Marshlands
We decided to open a cafe and from start to finish the children planned, organised and opened the cafe. Using a multitude of skills to achieve their outcome - the children worked in a very creative way.
Using ICT skills the children researched France as a country and a culture and shared the information they had found out with each other. In Literacy they produced leaflets, passports, posters, quizes, tickets and spent time discussing what needed to hapen to make the whole event a success.
In Numeracy the children looked at the currency and produced their own Bureau de Change which allowed the visitors to the cafe an opportunity to change their English money into Euros ready to purchase from the cafe.
The process was managed very effectively because using Critical Skills we chunked the challenge effectively into specific tasks which needed doing. As a teacher I facilitated that process but the children ran the sessions. As a job was completed then the children ticked that off and signed up for the next one. Evalaution took place at the end of each day to maximise the success of the project and the children learnt huge amounts from the evaluation time.
These jobs included: undertaking an online shop at Asda for stock, decorating the Art block to look like a French Cafe, setting up the travel agency, the Bureau de Change and the Passport Control.
The final effect in the Art Block was amazing. The Cafe opened first of all for Class 1 but all Classes were allocated a slot with parents having the final slot on Thursday afternoon to come and share the experience with their children.

The children entered the experience through the Travel Agents where they were givent heir ticket, a brochure and a passport. Next stop Passport Control and the children had their thumb print taken for security purposes. Then they entered the Bureau de Change to exchange their English money into Euros at the rate of the day!
They were taken to their table by the maitre d'cafe and served from an extensive menu. The Chefs worked extremely hard to keep up with the orders that kept flying into the kitchen - but everybody got fed!
Have a look at the movie below and share some of the amazing work with our children at Marshlands. I am very proud of them.
Mrs Ward Class 5 teacher.
